Our Island Animal Centre is set within 23 acres of pasture and woodland in a semi-rural setting in Rookley.
On site we have various outbuildings and properties housing our Kennels, Cattery, Rabbitry, Ferritry and small animal accommodations plus an indoor Wildlife Suite and outdoor spaces including Aviaries, and ponds for Waterfowl and Ocean Bird. We also benefit from 4 grass dog runs and a newly built outdoor rabbit exercise and enrichment area.
Where required, our animal care facilities are temperature controlled, some with underfloor heating and wall heating to ensure our animals have the best care and are comfortable.
The new purpose built Reception building enables us to have a welcoming reception area, a committee room for dog interactions and for gentle training and introductions to sights, sounds and smells some animals may never have experienced. All charity administration happens onsite in our offices and we have a new conference room with its own separate facilities to rent to local businesses for meeting space and carry out classroom/education activities.
Both our cattery and dog kennels are equipped with separate veterinary consultation rooms for visiting veterinarians to assess and complete medical exams on all our shelter animals and although we do not have on-site surgical veterinary facilities we do have the support of our local vets who are incredibly accommodating when we have animals in need and require surgical intervention and all hospital treatments are carried out in the safety of a local veterinary clinic.
You may have spotted our vans around the Island. We have one that travels between our charity shops, transporting goods. We then have a further two specialist vans to enable us to transfer all kinds of animals to and from the vets for their medical appointments.
Maintenance and ongoing facility improvements are necessary and part of daily animal centre life coupled with the demands to upkeep of a 23 acre working animal centre and we are constantly reviewing our policies and standards of care to meet the demands of current and future animal health and welfare needs.
Through facility maintenance and improvements we aim to meet the growth and rising demand of animal care on the Isle of Wight and enable us to rescue and rehome all animals in need.
