The RSPCA Isle of Wight, will next week open a new shop on the High Street in Ryde, replacing smaller premises across the road.
The previous shop in Ryde had been so successful that when 38 High Street came up for sale, the charity jumped at the chance to buy the much larger shop. Says branch Director Steve Backhouse “The income we receive from our four shops is vital to our ongoing work. We were able to purchase the premises with a generous legacy that was gifted to us with a restriction that it was used to support future financial stability. The larger footprint will enable us to increase turnover, and we will reduce our overheads by no longer needing to pay rent.”
Although the Isle of Wight Branch is affiliated to the RSPCA, it is an independent charity and generates most of its income from local shop purchases, legacies and donations. With overall costs of nearly £1m a year, the need to keep the cash coming in is imperative. Last year the charity helped 61 dogs, 163 cats, 60 rabbits, 55 small animals and 66 wild animals, and they hope to increase that number significantly in 2025.
The new shop joins the charity’s other stores based in Newport, Sandown and Ventnor. Between them they provide a third of the annual funding needed to continue the work of this unique Island charity.
The doors will be open to customers from 10am on Monday, 13 January 2025 and the team is keen to show off the new beautifully merchandised retail opportunity.
Says Steve: “We have some lovely items in a variety of categories – do come along and pick up a bargain and help a very worthy cause at the same time.”
You can also help by donating and gift aiding good quality items, and also by volunteering your time to help out in the shop – or of course by making a donation at www.rspca-isleofwight.org.uk.
