How We are Helping Wildlife
We’re here to look out for the welfare of all animals across the Isle of Wight. This includes wild animals as well as pets!
Improving the welfare of such a vast range of animals and species is a challenge. Our work covers a huge range of different areas yet primarily focuses on:
- Admission and rehabilitation of wildlife
- Education to reduce human-wildlife conflict – helping people to live in harmony with wildlife
We use scientific research and practical evidence to support our views and encourage change in many different ways.
Wildlife Care Advice
Our Island Wildlife Centre, in harmony with the National RSPCA wildlife departments and four regional RSPCA wildlife centres, utilises developed wildlife rehabilitation protocols, based on knowledge, experience and detailed, scientific research.
These protocols describe the best ways to care for these animals and are updated as science and knowledge progresses. We also uphold the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Councils Code of Ethics.
Injured Animals
Wildlife rehabilitation is very tricky and best left to experts so that the animals have the best chance of survival back in the wild. We would always recommend that if you find a wild animal that you think is injured, you give it to an experienced rehabilitator, or contact national emergency helpline.
Please note that within our Island Wildlife Centre , we only admit wildlife directly from veterinary clinics after a post health check or directly from the public if they are safely contained and brought to our Centre. We do not currently have a wildlife ambulance service. Our Island wildlife need your help, please check out how you can help in the best way possible; wildlife advice.
Orphaned Animals
Orphaned animals come into our centre every year, but it depends on the species as to what you should do. A lot of baby wild animals can look like orphans, so always check to make sure the wild animal is orphaned first.
