The Isle of Wight is fortunate to be one of the few places in the UK where the protected species of red squirrel, the only squirrel native to the British Isles, has its home. Our island’s woodland along with conservation efforts have brought a resurgence of the squirrels in recent years however annually, many baby and adult animals need care, support and rehabilitation to return to the wild.
We regret to inform that currently we are still unable to attend or admit seabirds, waders, waterfowl and certain other species until further notice because of the increased Avian flu risk. The animals that we can take is under constant review following advice from the National RSPCA and DEFRA, and members of the public are advised to call the centre for advice.
If you come across a sick or injured seabird, wader or waterfowl please call the RSPCA national response line on 03001234999, or for dead or sick captive birds call DEFRA notifiable disease number 03000 200301. Please do not touch, pick up, or transport them. We are happy, as always, to give advice, so do feel free to call our regular number 01983 840287.
