About us

The RSPCA Isle of Wight branch is an independently registered Island-based charity and is one of 150 independent charities that support the work of the RSPCA at a local community level. Originally established in the 1950s, we fundraise on the Island in order to support its most vulnerable animals.

RSPCA Isle of Wight

We’re one of over 150 local branches that are proud to be part of the wider RSPCA network. Our work is focussed on caring for animals in need on the Isle of Wight. Here’s a quick guide to what we do, and how this differs from the RSPCA national charity:

RSPCA Isle of Wight

  • Supported by a large team of local volunteers
  • Raises money locally through charity shops, legacies, donations, fundraising events and Bohemia Boarding

RSPCA

  • Founded 1824
  • Employs a team of inspectors who can rescue animals in need and take them to a local branch
  • Operates the national cruelty helpline 0300 1234 999
  • Collects evidence for animal cruelty prosecutions
  • Campaigns for higher animal welfare standards
  • Raises money nationally via donations, legacies and corporate support

Our work

We’re an independent charity, supporting the work of the RSPCA at a local level.

We provide care and assistance to the animals on the Isle of Wight that require our help. The Island Animal Centre near Godshill cares for dogs, cats, rabbits, small animals and wildlife that need our help.  We have an experienced employee team supported by a large number of volunteers who provide the specialist care needed for animals that most need our help.

Fundraising

It costs around £750,000 each year to run the Island Animal Centre. We don’t receive any government funding, and less than 10% of our income comes via the national RSPCA charity.

We therefore rely on the generosity of the local community to support our animal welfare work. All monies raised on the Island, remain on the Island and helps support abandoned, abused, and orphaned  animals. Funds are raised through our charity shops, fundraising events, legacies and donations.

Our facilities

Our Island Animal Centre is set within 23 acres of pasture and woodland in a semi-rural setting in Rookley.

On site we have various outbuildings and properties housing our Kennels, Cattery, Rabbitry and small animal accommodation. We also have a wildlife building, including aviaries, and ponds for waterfowl and seabirds. For exercising dogs we have 4 grass runs and for rabbits, a newly built outdoor exercise and enrichment area.

Where required, our animal care facilities are temperature controlled, some with underfloor heating and wall heating to ensure our animals have the best care and are comfortable.

Our Reception building includes a welcoming reception area and shop,  a committee/training room, and offices for our fundraising and administration team.

Both our cattery and dog kennels are equipped with separate veterinary consultation rooms for visiting vets.  Our partner vets visit the centre every week, with further treatments taking place off-site at local clinics.
