The first Red Squirrel Ride takes place this September offering cyclists a unique chance to explore the Isle of Wight’s stunning off-road trails while raising vital funds for local animals in need.
Taking place on Saturday, 20th September, the event is organised by the RSPCA Isle of Wight, with all proceeds going directly toward caring for vulnerable, abandoned, and neglected animals across the Island.
To help make the event more accessible to mainland riders, Wightlink is offering 20% off ferry travel for all participants travelling from the mainland – making it easier for family and friends to join in too.
Open to all ages and abilities, the Red Squirrel Ride features two circular, largely traffic-free routes that make the most of the Island’s disused railway lines and cycle paths. Riders can choose between a 16-mile family-friendly loop or a more challenging 34-mile route for those seeking a longer adventure with a few extra hills.
Both routes start and finish at the RSPCA Isle of Wight Animal Centre near Merstone, offering cyclists a welcome before and after their ride.
“We want this to be a welcoming, relaxed event that celebrates the Island’s amazing landscapes while supporting a very serious cause,” said Veronica Chrisp, Marketing and Fundraising Manager at RSPCA Isle of Wight. “Every pound raised will help us care for and rehome animals that have nowhere else to turn.”
As an independent RSPCA branch, the Isle of Wight centre receives no government funding and relies heavily on public support to continue its vital work. The Red Squirrel Ride plays a key role in helping fund animal rescue, care, and rehoming services on the Island.
Organisers are encouraging people to sign up early, not only to secure their place but to help the team plan for numbers.
