Last month, we lost one of our most loyal and cherished supporters, Sheila Keen, whose dedication to the charity spanned many decades and touched countless lives—both human and animal.
Sheila first became involved with the branch in Godshill in the 1970’s shortly after moving to the Isle of Wight with her husband and two children. The family opened a book and antiques shop in Ventnor, where they quickly became well-known and popular local faces.
Upon her retirement, Sheila and her family were approached by the RSPCA Isle of Wight to help open a small charity shop next door to what is now the current RSPCA store on Ventnor High Street. This moment marked the beginning of Sheila’s unwavering commitment to the charity.
Sheila ran the shop alongside a dedicated team of local volunteers and worked hard to grow it into the thriving store it is today. During these years, she also adopted Heidi the Schnauzer and two cats, Bella and Donna, and supported the branch further by hosting Open Garden events to raise much-needed funds.
In the 1990s, Sheila stepped away from the shop to care for her husband until his passing. Despite this personal loss, she continued to pour her creativity and energy into helping animals on the Island. She wrote poetry, painted, handmade cards, and sold her creations to neighbours and friends—always with the intention of supporting the RSPCA Isle of Wight.
Sheila continued this work well into her later years. At 96 years old, she published her first book, Geriatric Nostalgia, a collection of her poems written to bring joy to others and raise proceeds for the branch. Her determination and spirit stood as a testament to her belief that age is no barrier to making a difference.
Throughout her lifetime, Sheila raised significant funds for the RSPCA Isle of Wight and helped countless vulnerable animals find their second chance.
Rebecca from RSPCA Isle of Wight said:
“Sheila was a wonderful lady and a true inspiration—her kindness and love for animals never faltered. She had the best sense of humour, not to mention the compassion she had for always caring and looking out for those around her. She contributed so much to our charity; we are incredibly grateful and won’t forget her dedication.”
